6061-O Aluminum vs. 6061-T6 Aluminum

Both 6061-O aluminum and 6061-T6 aluminum are variants of the same material. They share alloy composition and many physical properties, but develop different mechanical properties as a result of different processing.

For each property being compared, the top number is 6061-O aluminum and the bottom number is 6061-T6 aluminum.

Mechanical Properties

Brinell Hardness   33
Fatigue Strength, MPa   61
Shear Strength, MPa   84
Tensile Strength: Ultimate (UTS), MPa   130
Tensile Strength: Yield (Proof), MPa   76

Thermal Properties

Melting Completion (Liquidus), C   650 1200*F
  650 1200*F
Specific Heat Capacity, J/kg-K   900

Common Calculations

Resilience: Ultimate (Unit Rupture Work), MJ/m3   23
Resilience: Unit (Modulus of Resilience), kJ/m3   42
Strength to Weight: Axial, points   13
Strength to Weight: Bending, points   21
Thermal Shock Resistance, points   5.7

When companies boast about using 6061 Aluminum there's a probability that they may NOT be using the top quality T6 grade, if they were they would more than likely state it.

FBO Billet distributors are all manufactured using 6061-T6 high quality Aluminum

Our Limiter bushing are made from a proprietary composition of an even higher grade of aluminum usually found in the manufacturing of high quality precision commercial aircraft components.
